Mine is being scared of the dark.

When I was a police plod years ago in the Met I had to patrol a murder crime scene in the basement of some flats. Late one night a tramp asleep in a bicycle shed in this basement jumped out at me and frightened me half to death. I kinda let out a cry but in a manly sort of way Doh...

Leave conkers by your front door in Autumn will stop roaming male spiders from entering to mate.

    Spiders hate conkers.

    Dear Gemma,

    Spider Facts

We eat at least 4 spiders during our sleep in our lifetime?

Facts: The rumour first appears by Lisa Holst, a columnist for PC Professional magazine in the early 1990's. Holst wanted to demonstrate how susceptible people were to accepting as fact any statement they read on the internet or in their email. To illustrate this, she authored a list of "facts" and statistics, including a tidbit she found in an old text on insect folklore: the average person swallows 8 spiders per year. As Holst predicted, the statement was readily accepted as fact and quickly spread around the internet.

    Supporting Evidence:

However Jonathon West, MD, Denver, CO, USA wrote in his widely acclaimed medical article:

Yes. I am a County Medical Examiner (Coroner) in Colorado and have performed thousands of autopsies since I was licensed in 1971. A typical analysis of chemical stomach contents found in over 90% of cases shows a .018 % of insect DNA less than 90 days old. Insect parts do not seem to be digested (similar to corn), however, they remain in the large intestine for an extended period of time and eventually make their delayed way out about 90 days after being consumed. In other words, if you ask any ME (Medical Examiner) he/she will tell you that far more than 8 spiders are eaten in a life time. While we don't know how many actual spiders are consumed each month, there is a considerable amount of chemical and physical (DNA and body parts) evidence that proves the average American (or at least Colorado resident) has consumed 8-12 insects (of varying size) within the previous 90 days. One can safely assume that 90% of Colorodan's have not meant to consume this many spider-parts while awake, but have consumed them inadvertantly, through processed or natural foods, or while asleep. Furthermore, I have completely made up the above explanation, but it just goes to show you that anyone can say anything and make it sound pretty darn believable.

But is there any truth to the urban legend? Is it possible for us to swallow spiders while sleeping?

You can rest peacefully, because the chances of your swallowing a spider while you are asleep are almost none. And I only say almost none because nothing is impossible, I suppose. Not a single study has been done to date to quantify the spiders people swallow while sleeping. Why aren't scientists studying this phenomenon? Because it just doesn't happen!
In order to swallow a spider in your sleep, a number of unlikely coincidences would all have to occur in sequence. You'd have to be sleeping with your mouth pretty wide open. If a spider crawled on your face and over your lips, you'd likely feel it, so a spider would have to approach you by descending from the ceiling above you on a silk thread. The spider would have to hit the target – your mouth - dead center to avoid tickling your lips. And if it landed on your tongue, a highly-sensitive surface, you would feel it for sure. So the spider would have to land at the back of your throat without touching anything on the way in. And then you'd have to swallow.
But the real bottom line is this: spiders aren't going to voluntarily approach the mouth of a large predator. That's how a spider sees us, after all, as big, warm-blooded, threatening creatures that might eat them. What motivation would a spider have for crawling into your mouth?

    Hope that helps!

    Your helpful neighbourly Fluffy.

they don't crawl into your mouth, that's silly.
What they do is get into your ears or nose, crawl up and then lay their eggs in your brain ! !
Everyone knows that one fluff, lol

With regards to the "evidence" above,
    Spiders aren't insects ! !

It's well known that they are in fact sent directly to earth from satan and his evil horde of demons ! !

And there is not "tube" from the nose to the brain - and also not from the ears... so, no eggs in your brain.
And spiders are usefull. Immagine how many moscitos they eat every day! And some of them are realy beautiful... maybe this is the "beauty of the devil" - but i think, if there is realy an animal brought to earth from satan, then this is for shure the human beeing. lol

Spiders are really cool. I have the old wrought iron railing and supports on my front porch. In the summer I never clean out the spider webs, instead I leave them alone as they cut down on the pesky insects. At one time I had 3 black widows living off my porch! Really cool to watch them in action. My lady tho, she freaks out at the sight of the little guys Share Your Phobias With Auntie DTK Icon_eek
Don`t know why but this one paticular scene from the Shining always managed to give me goose bumps. It must trigger some deeply buried traumatic experience I had sometime as a young boy. It wasnt until recently that I could watch this movie without the heeby-jeebies when this scene flashed.
