Problems
Hi all and my three friends .
I thought this would be the right place to post my topic.
I have ecperiënced some problems with the error "Gathering Exception Data".
It made me install Halo six times now from , Re-Installing to - remove and Install.
I even signed-up to xfire again (Igneon1) cause I can,t enter a server trough xfire , nor by direct IP.
I don,t get to see any server on the Gamespy Internet lobby.
(scrolling text in at the bottom: manual update required get it from www.microsoft.com/games/halo/downloads/aspx.
Sometimes showing 2 servers probebly runned on someones own pc.
Showing no ping (pressing F1) and no gametyping (pressing "T"or "Y")
The game shows a new error; your cliënt is older then the server.( see my xfire screenshot)
Game is updated - firewall off - Norton antifirus off - halo filters set to reserve all servers - internet is working fine.
No changes where made before this, only installed Explorer8 (automatic update microsoft) and removed it.
Made a post on xfire forum too, more people encounter this experiënce.
Clan members and my three friends, this is the reason wy I,m and going lame
Eric

Re: Problems
Eric i figured that was your invite to xfire but wasn't 100% sure
Ummmm did you remove all traces when you did reinstall or just run uninstaller, because sometimes it will leave some files
One of the geniuses in the clan will surely figure this out for you
Great to see ya Eric
Sparky (Eric lol)

Re: Problems
Oh dear, I'm no expert but the "your cliënt is older then the server message" isn't that when a user has not updated all the Halo patches to make latest game version compatible with servers.
As Eric says maybe a complete un-install of all traces of Halo, reloading, and then importantly ensure the latest Halo patches are reloaded to prevent the gathering exceptional data messages.
When uninstalling you may want to ensure the map file was uninstalled and those modded maps or the Halo re-installation may not read corrrect leading to error messages.
I'm assuming you have made the usual checks:
Check firewall is allowing Halo program to run
Turn off or remove pop up ad blockers that can prevent game programs working
Check for latest drivers and Direct X
Run Anti virus and spyware checks
You may even wish to try creating a new user account in windows XP as sometimes an account gets corrupted.
Lastly I hope these problems did not ocurr if and when you updated your Internet Explorer to version 8 I know there have been some incompatability problems with IE8 blocking the installation or use of an Active X control and blocking some well known major websites I have no idea if there could be other issues yet to be fixed.
Sorry I could not really be of help, you could try and google your problem as chances are others have experienced your problem, hope you get it fixed soon Buddy!

Re: Problems
Did you install IE8 when you did your weekly windows update? If so then it may be one of the "Knowledge Base" updates that has caused the problem.
These KB updates usually is what causes these sorts of problems.
To check if any KB updates were downloaded at the same time as IE8 ( assuming it was a windows update download) go to the control panel, click on programs (sometimes called programs and features) and you will see every program installed on your computer. scroll down and look for things that have KB****** in the name, (* = a number). You will be able to see the date that the KB update was installed and if it coincides with the time you started having problems then right click on it and uninstall it. If there are more than one uninstall one at a time and then retest, until you have found the correct one.

Re: Problems
Ty for the replys.
There where 2 updates at the time;
The updates below where poping-up for a week, together with Explorer 8, I klicked it away to do it later or not at all.
But I did, and removed Explorer 8 same with the 2nd one below.
1 for Security for Windows Media Player (KB968816)
1 for Security for Windows XP (KB956844)
both at the date it occured 26-09-2009.
I deleted the second one, no result after re-start.
My first solution is now to; buy a new harddrive to back-up my data.
Then delete everything on the old one and install Windows XP again.
Or buy new components, its up for some seriouse makeover.
If one of the above is done, I,m going dorment for a while.
I dislike these errors:
Cannot allocate required memory, some other applications has loaded where Halo needs to be located.
(I,m sure it,s a minor problem, I only see 1 server on the gamespy internet lobby and Halo doesn,t start-up like before)
Untill then, enjoy what you still have.
I apriciated the imput I realy do, did, done.

or this one: www.microsoft.com/games/halo
I tryed : start - execute - typed dxdiag

Re: Problems
Fluff is puzzled as he knows very little geek and even less french, but as was discussed it may be worth downloading the latest Direct X again and also check Halo is permitted to run through XP Administrator user, (I think you can change programmes permission compatibility by clicking right mouse button on your short cut desk top icon and chose administrator and then see if Halo runs properly and x fire servers come on line ). If your not running a retail CD version of Halo it could mabe be a bad nocd crack running, re-installed patches can apparently overwrite nocd cracks and if so, download a new one. I would even try creating an extra XP user account and then open Halo through that.

Re: Problems
I spend quit esome time now with all your reactions.
Active x is the problem, I hope.
Went to "start" - "All programs" - "Windows update" - (surge for programs) it says: "Install Active x bla,bla to show the website".
recommendation:
Go to: below your adressbar, rightmouseklick there, security warning install direct x (yes I want)
Nothing happens there when I do this.
Let me tell you in short whats on my browser:
Below the internet browserplace (ontop of the screen)
there is just a orange star, right from it is the "e" of inernet explorer.
All the way to the right on this line is "the house of home - gray thing - letter - printericon - 4 black arrows (where Extra is suppose to be to select your preverences) blue dot with ? - messenger.
The recomendation doesn,t work, nothing activates when I klick it.
Does some1 have some matches, my eyes begins to close.
And I want to see this lol.
Ty all, I,m still working on it with you

Re: Problems
I dont think its an ActiveX problem. ActiveX works with web browsers to distribute data, and Halo multiplayer isn't played through web browsers.
OK i know we have been here before but humour me and try it again.
Uninstall Halo
use a registry cleaning program try this one
http://www.ccleaner.com/download
if you wish after you have downloaded it you can check for malware
use
http://virusscan.jotti.org/en
ok after you have used the registry cleaner to remove all traces of Halo, reinstall Halo using your CD
Update using haloupdate.exe
if it comes back with you have an up to date version try downloading manually from here
http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=24577876
Once you have done all this try testing it.
I know you have tried it before but lets try it again with the registry cleaner to get rid of all traces of the old installation.

Re: Problems
Ok, I tryed all of the 3 websites. (and others)
I can excess them but can,t download anything.
I hear just a blieb when I try, that meens a pop-up is blocked. (no warning epears)
The data steam is stoped, to enable this I must have axcess to allow cookies (and other) by preferences under "extra" in explorer.
But again there are only 4 black arrows there, prior there where choises like, "extra" for settings to get rid of temp files - history - etc.
I made a systemcheckpoint again,( befor this started going wrong, no result.
I am missing something in order to download. (like updates, allthough it says "halo is up to date") ( halo is removed)
Again during this, firewall was off - Norton internet security was off.
System says, I,m using Explorer 8.
Ty again Mez/clanmembers, I want to humor you and myselve.
We will work this out, someday. (and for others)
stll under construction,
Eric

Re: Problems
ok if the pop up blocker is blocking the download page from opening then hold down CTRL when you click on the link
or alternatively click on tools, then choose pop-up blocker and temporarily allow pop-ups

Re: Problems
no i mean allow them ... so the pop up with the download window appears. if you dis-allow them then the pop up is blocked, we dont want the pop up blocked we want it to open.

Re: Problems
I tryed, it opens a new Tab on every link but downloading isn,t working.
However, Java gave me a pop-upwarning that there was an update, downloaded succesfuly. (it says, I hope it did)
I made a report to microsoft helpdesk, of my problems consurning my Explorer 8 layout.
A link was send of fileing the report.
Use of Diagnostic tool, failed.(it was scanning but waited for 20 min.
Internet gateway didn,t show any activety of reseving data.
http://support.microsoft.com/Dcode/Default.aspx?guid=426c146-3abg-428b-8f48-54b5e6c7116a&ln=nl.
(Some visited sites (like ccleaner.com) don,t close down, only minemize is possible.)
Ty again, will pick this-up later today.
Emagine how happy I will be when things are working again.

Re: Problems
Yo Eric, catch me or Joe (barney) on xfire and we can send you a program called malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) and that may get rid or your problem.
Re: Problems
Thanks to all for there imput, it is very aducational.
Still can,t download the "Spydoctor" - "Advanced Registery Optimizer" links above.
Thats still a Explorer fault ( still no excess to "Extra" to change settings)
But, I CAN RUN HALO AGAIN, I see many servers.
Joe, Eric thank you so much and Mez you too, you let me read more then you think and it will continue to solve my Explorer problem.
Guys hit me again to pass me the links through xfire like Joe did, that worked to download Malwarebytes'Anti-Malware.
My internetprovider is set to avoid Spam and virussus clearly not enough protection.
Don,t go easy on me in gameplay, lol, I like some setbacks when friends are arround to help.
T,ll very soon, Family friends.

Update:
Just for future trouble shooting:
Strangley enough I could download Firefox.
Through that browser it allowed me to download again what wasn,t able befor.(like this website)
Downloaded IE8 but sadly the layout is still wrong, no "Extra" to select preferences.
Microsoft advised me to use the original OS XP disk to install again.

I work with i Mac 24 inch at my work.
Great OS (don,t buy upgreads), nice layout, still slow on running only 2 programs, (Adobe Illstr - Proofmaster (print/cut program)) or compleet shutdown of program.
Nice appl. with I photo, and I Phone.
There is SPAM too, lots of it.
But PC is very aducational and shared in every home.
Mabe I should considder a Intel based Mac and learn even more
Ty for the suggestion "Postman"
