The Official Xmas Grinch Thread

Post by Guest on Thu Dec 03, 2009 1:10 pm

What do you hate about Christmas?

Is it fightining fellow shoppers for that last minute jumper?

Mine is the Coca Cola lorry festooned with xmas lights that comes on our televisions in September.

I hate decorations !!!

I don't see how hanging crappy plastic things from the ceiling and other things embodies the spirit of Christmas.

Don't get me wrong, I am not religious at all but all these horrible decorations annoy me !

I dont like getting gifts, because i like to decide myself, what i want and what not - and on the other side i dont like to get no gifts, because then i feel unloved geek pffff christmas is difficult .... and i dont like to look for presents i could give to someone who has everything he/she needs - but also true is, that im happy, when i see, that my gift made someone happy.

For me, christmas is only nice with my family - the rest i dont need.

Ahhh yes - grmpf - and what realy annoys me is when the stores begin to make christmas-decorations allready in september!!!

What is the spirit of Christmas? Is the establish church's view that it is the birth of the son of the popular deity of the time, or is it something deeper. The pagans were celebrating the days starting to get longer and a return in the near future to warmer weather when things bagan to grow again, and used natural materials to decorate. The yule log, the garlands and the wreaths all come from this. The ancient Romans celebrated Saturnalia, which was a huge excuse to eat and drink too much.

Sadly, Christmas as we know it was probably an elaborate plan by the Romans, who had just converted to Christianity, to get all the countries of the Roman Empire to convert too. The masses didin't care what it was called or what they were celebrating as long as they did it in the same way they always did, and the church leaders felt smug that they had converted the whole Empire to Christianity.

There is no evidence to suggest Jesus was born in December, in fact astrologists have done calculations, based on the premis that the christmas star that led the 3 magi to Jesus was in fact Halley's comet, that his birth was more likely to have been in March.

So what really annoys me about Christmas, is the story of the first Christmas, the birth of Jesus.

Now I am secure in the knowledge that I will burn in hell for all eternity!

Very nice and interessting post, Mez Smile - Sometimes we have a bad feeling, because christmas today is not more than beeing together and giving eachother gifts ... instead of thinking of the birth of Jesus and going to church at midnight - but i like the tought, that there might be a deeper sence in christmas, than that. It is not for nothing, that we have a christmas-tree. It has nothing to do with the church - it is a symbol for live and spring. A light in the dark of the winther - a hope against the death. Beeing together in friendship and love - this is christmas for me. I hope i may be with you all a little in this time - to celebrate an internet-christmas group hug

And if all doesnt work, i would like to have it with the romans: i will eat and drink a lot without haveing a bad feeling! angelic
