Remembrance Day

Post by Virago on Wed Nov 11, 2009 3:05 am

At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, Remembrance Day was written into history. It was the day The Armistice was signed to end hostilities of the great war of 1914-1918.

The Armistice was signed to end the bloodiest war the world had ever seen. Also known as Armistice Day,
we now honor it with a minute of silence at 11am, 11th November every year. Remember the people of our country that gave their life for a conflict that they didn’t choose to have. They went there and fought for their country, but also fought for other people and countries too.

Remembrance Day
is the day we honor the past. Share a thought for the people that made the ultimate sacrifice. Share another thought for the grief it caused their parents and siblings. Then spare a thought for the other side… those soldiers were not there by choice. They were sent there by orders of their governments and they didn’t want to die any more than our soldiers did.

The battlefields of Belgium and France claimed countless lives. The red poppies were the first flowers to appear on the blood soaked battlefields of Flanders. It was said that they were red from the blood of the soldiers. The Flanders Poppy
became known as the flower to wear in honor of Remembrance Day.

Thank you Mez, for reminding us that we must never forget what our ancestors did it so we can live free and in peace.

Remembrance day! Me too, i think of all those who gave their lives to fight for their countries. I think of all the sadness, blood and wounds, of fear and braveness, of victory and defeat. And i think of all those who died on the battelfield instead of bringing the world forward with their knowledge, intelligence ore love. I think of all those inventions, that never were made, because the inventior was no longer here. I think of kulture, medizine and art who miss till today all the inputs of those who did not come home. And i think of the children of the children of the children who never came to earth, because of war.
Sometimes it is needed to fight, no doubt. But we must venture everything possible to keep the peace our ancestors fought for.

Thank you Mez, for this post. We dont have this day in Switzerland. It is very interessting to hear about it and to think of this all.

Even at the gym they all stop at the 11th hour for remeberance - all except for one young girl on a treadmill who shall remain nameless.
